The black subject problem. Camera's trying to get the statue to 12% grey and by the time enough light comes in, the rest of the picture is blown out.
The greyish stone on the ground would have been a good way to lock exposure and then move the subject into the photo and click. You could carry the digital grey card but a light-medium grey anything works fine. Failing all that, auto-exposure bracketing might have given one good pic but you'd need to keep the pictures at least a full f-stop or more apart.
